Welcome to the section dedicated to the various teaching experiences I have accumulated during my career.
(April 2021 - September 2022)
Prior to the start of the program, I was primarily responsible for developing active learning tasks and appropriate assessment methods in cooperation with the Executive Committee staff. I was also in charge of preparing publicity materials and liaising with invited lecturers from abroad. During the program, I created an environment in which students could share their knowledge through team discussions and gave a number of lectures combining my research themes and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to encourage students to discuss and propose innovative solutions to key challenges in global society. The lectures encouraged discussion on innovative solutions to key challenges in the global community. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic necessitating a hyflex teaching modality, I was tasked with identifying and implementing innovative online teaching resources to ensure that participating students could fulfil the course goals regardless of their location. I was also charged with furthering students’ understanding of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) during fieldwork sessions, which took place in various locations around Hokkaido. I was responsible for grading student's written and oral assessments, providing feedback/questions during final presentations, and compiling final student grades before release. Following the completion of each year’s program, I also provided the organising committee with a detailed report of the teaching performance and student engagement with the program, including several relevant suggestions to be implemented in the following programs.
(May 2020 - Present)
As part of my role as a Teaching Assistant for Nitobe College, I was given the opportunity to work closely with students in a specialized program designed to facilitate the development of a variety of 'soft skills' including; creative & critical thinking, team organization & management, cross-disciplinary collaboration, etc.
As the teaching framework at Nitobe College necessitates the use of small working groups to fulfil its learning objectives, combined with the global necessity to utilize an online platform to deliver classes, my responsibility as a teaching assistant developed into a much more multi-layered role than would have traditionally been expected.
As such, I had a much greater role in helping to deliver taught content than had the teaching environment been primarily classroom-based. Interacting with students from a variety of nationalities allowed me to develop a much broader perspective of experiences, and appreciate how individuals' thoughts and contributions are influenced by their cultural backgrounds. In turn, this has encouraged me to adapt and individualize my interactions with students to facilitate greater participation and completion of the stated learning objectives.
Furthermore, I encourage students to recognize how the skills that they acquire as part of the course can be utilized not only in their academic work but also in their future careers. I believe connecting the taught content to the individual motivations of each student is crucial towards achieving their cooperation and acceptance.
